The raft was one of the original and simplest modes of\u202ftransporting people across water<\/strong>. Through time rafts were modified for use as\u202flifeboats and used by militaries<\/strong>\u202faround the world. The first record of\u202fcommercial rafting dates back to the 1940s<\/strong>\u202fin the United States of America. It was at that time that the word rafting began to be\u202fequated with recreation, adrenaline, fun, and of course wild rivers<\/strong>.\u202f Rafting is an\u202fexciting outdoor activity combining sport with pristine natural beauty<\/strong>\u202fthat creates an opportunity that should not be missed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years passed before rafting as recreation appeared\u202fin Slovenia<\/strong>. Around 1972, the\u202ffirst kayakers<\/strong>\u202fappeared on the So\u010da. Foreigners from northern Germany were the first to recognize Slovenia\u2019s gem, the So\u010da, and its unspoiled natural beauty and appreciate it as an opportunity for kayaking. The first kayaking was non-commercial and was organized simply by kayak enthusiasts.\u202fRafting appeared several years later<\/strong>, around 1988. Rafting has from the outset been\u202fmainly a commercial undertaking<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u202fearly pioneer days of rafting<\/strong>\u202fwere quite interesting.\u202fThe appearance<\/strong>\u202fof the rafters at that time would be\u202fconsidered comical<\/strong>\u202ftoday as their equipment was often lacking and would even be considered rather strange. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our modern rafts have small holes in the sides or at the ends to allow water to drain. The first rafts used on the So\u010da did not possess this feature. As the rafts hit the rapids, they quickly began to take on water which made the boats heavy and difficult to steer. The rafting pioneers solved this problem by assigning one of the persons in the boat to bail out the raft with a bucket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solutions were\u202fimprovised in every area, even with equipment<\/strong>. The So\u010da river is an Alpine river, so the water temperature is always very low, ranging from 7 degrees in the spring to 14 in the summer. In the early years, rafters wore rubber gloves used for washing dishes to protect their hands in the cold water. Their other gear was anything but warm and comfortable. The use of helmets was more of an exception rather than the rule. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early day of rafting on the So\u010da, the guides were far more reckless compared to today\u2019s standards.\u202fToday safety is paramount<\/strong>. Before it was totally about maximum enjoyment and the adrenaline rush that was available predominantly on the most dangerous parts of the river. Now, the focus is\u202fon balancing enjoyment with safety and avoiding the areas of greatest risk<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rafting continues to\u202fgrow in popularity<\/strong>\u202fin Slovenia. Each year more and more people come to Bovec to enjoy rafting on the So\u010da as well as the other water sports available on the river. We who have followed in the steps of the pioneers of this sport continually\u202fseek to promote rafting in the So\u010da valley<\/strong>. \u202fThe adventure of rafting the So\u010da\u202fremains long in one’s memory<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
